When I had knee pain over 1.5 years ago, the first doctor looked at my xrays and asked me when I wanted a knee replacement. That freaked me out and I did nothing for a long time, hoping it would heal and it did not. I did a series of therapy for it, and that did not help either. I then made an appointment for a second opinion with the doctors who see the Red Sox and New England Patriots. They said I did not need to replace my knee and gave me a shot and said if that did not work, next thing to do would be an MRI and possibly Orthoscopy.
We decided to move to Austin, so I did nothing other than more therapy to calm the pain, which helped some.
In Austin, I was referred to Texas Orthopedics. Wow. They saw me, took a new xray and did my MRI in the same day. I had my surgery within a month, my choice. I was told that in most cases I should be up and about with little pain the Monday following my Friday surgery. This did not turn out to be true.
In my case, when the doctor wentin he found two tears in my meniscus and he basically scraped off boney deposits from my knee cap and from the tops of my leg bones. The PT says this feels like a bone fracture.
I have had over four weeks of pain spikes between the 8 to 10 level...sleepless nights due to pain even though I take the meds, but I tried to pull back on the pain pills but this appears to be a bad idea. I don't take meds or vitamins easily. I just hate pills but I hate this level of pain more...so a few days ago, I decided to take my full level of meds and it SEEMS to help and I have had no pain spikes. I am finally consistently walking nearly normally except for some pain and some clicking in my knee. My PT says I have to work through the pain, build up my muscles so that the knee will work properly. I sure hope so. I been trying very hard and today when I go to therapy I will NOT be dragging my leg...haha. She yelled at me on Tuesday, but the darn thing was hurting!
I take a lot of pain. My first three tooth fillings I got without novacaine because I was too afraid of needles. In childbirth, I did not lose control even though it was not easy. This has been weeks and weeks of pain...so after a while it drains....
I am really looking forward to getting back to the gym and working out with my trainer. I have enjoyed doing water aerobics. I really have learned to appreciate being healthy and walking....all in good time I guess. Knee surgery is definately NOT for sissies.
