Fall brings thoughts of cool crisp nights, stoking up a fire in the fireplace, warmth, home and hearth. It is the time to make soups, and stews, a pot of chili, bake bread, comfort things...and for me this includes sauerkraut with mashed potatoes. My mother made this with sauerkraut, fresh pork, caraway seeds, and onion. You add some water...it cooks together and melts the flavors and the smell of this cooking takes me back home and I see my kitchen in Cocoa Beach, Florida in my head. It is as if the scent of this food cooking opens a memory teleporter and I am immediately there, many years ago on a dim lit November evening anticipating the flavors as I dip up a scoop of mashed potatoes. I called mom and dad tonight to tell them I am thinking of them. Mom mentioned her recipe and I said, “Yes Mom, that is how I prepared it.” I could hear her smile. It is an acquired taste I know..but for me, I really love it. It speaks of fall to me, it speaks of connections that roll back from my mother to her family’s roots in Germany. It is warm and fuzzy. I baked tonight too...Snickerdoodles...mmmm...baking and fall go together too. I am wishing Jason were here to enjoy these...they are his favorite. I love fall.
